The town hall is stepping up its efforts to clean up the borough’s streets

A new service offering free bulky waste collections for residents is being introduced by Barking and Dagenham Council.
Residents can now book up to four bulky waste items to be collected for free, removing the previous £35 charge.
The service is being introduced as part of a fresh effort by the town hall to tackle fly-tipping in the borough.
A dedicated fly-tip clearance crew is also being launched.
The council says that insight gathered from resident surveys and complaints shows that cleanliness remains one of the biggest concerns across the borough and it “shares that frustration”.
A range of approaches have been trialled in recent years, including the award-winning ‘Wall of Shame’ video series to highlight environmental crime, plus action days to tackle dumped waste in known hotspot areas.
Council leader Dominic Twomey said: “We’re determined to put an end to fly tipping in Barking and Dagenham and we’re hoping these new initiatives will be the start of the winning battle.”
Kashif Haroon, the council’s cabinet member for public realm and climate change, added: “These steps will hopefully yield noticeable results but clearing our streets is one thing, changing behaviours is another and we will continue to take action against people who fly-tip through fines and prosecution.”
