Lidl has revealed proposals for a store on the former Jewson site, reports Nick Clark, Local Democracy Reporter

A new Lidl supermarket could be built behind the former Jewson builders’ merchant yard in Dagenham, planning documents have revealed.
The Jewson, in Shafter Road, closed in 2025 and has been vacant ever since. Documents submitted to Barking and Dagenham Council now suggest that Lidl will soon apply for planning permission to build a new store there.
The documents say: “It is intended that a planning application will be submitted for the demolition of the existing buildings and the erection of a discount foodstore with access, parking, landscaping, and other associated works at Shafter Road, Dagenham.”
Lidl submitted the documents to the council in an application for a “screening opinion” to confirm whether the new development would need an environmenal impact assessment.
This usually comes before a full planning application. However the documents include early details including opening times, parking, and the proposed size of the building.
The plans say the Lidl would open from 8am to 10pm on weekdays and Saturdays including bank holidays, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
Site plans also suggest there would be 47 parking spaces including three disabled bays and four for parents and children
Documents also suggest that these will be underground, as “the foodstore will be sited above the car park”.
They say pedestrians and cars will enter the site from Shafter Road, and that there will be another pedestrian entrance from Rainham Road South.
Documents say that “the design and scale of the building” would be “in keeping with the emerging architecture of the surrounding site”.
Council planning officers confirmed a planning application would not need an environmental impact assessment last Thursday, 7th May.
