Nine young people from a Dagenham primary school have been invited to a glitzy ceremony after their film was nominated for an award.

Leading film education charity Into Film announced that One Moment, made by a group of Beam County Primary School pupils aged between nine and eleven, had been nominated for the Into Film Awards in the ‘best film’ category for children aged under eleven.

The glitzy ceremony has previously been attended by some of the biggest stars in the industry including Hugh Grant, Daniel Craig, Eddie Redmayne, Lily James, Gemma Arterton, Charles Dance, Simon Pegg and Martin Freeman.

In One Moment, Amari, a class clown and every teacher’s worst nightmare, is instructed to exit class due to his rebellious behaviour. Suddenly, Amari finds himself in the role of his teacher, where he realises the devastating impact of his behaviour on the person he loves most – his mother.

Amari must then make a vital decision and change his ways. Will the mirror give him a chance to return, or will it trap him eternally without the opportunity to rectify his mistakes?

Beam County Primary School was recently challenged by Barking and Dagenham Film Enterprise to create a film around the theme of metamorphosis, and the students subsequently gained valuable experience in all stages of filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production.

Impressively, the pupils went on to win the competition and enjoyed a film premiere at Vue Cinema in Romford, where they watched their vision come to life on the big screen and shared the moment with their families.

The final version of the film was edited by a professional director who visited the school with a film crew to complete the production. The children played a key creative role, clearly expressing how they wanted the film to look, sound, and feel.

The school said: “Being recognised in this way is an exceptional honour for the Beam community. The film illustrated how ‘one moment’ can shape a life forever, and this nomination stands as a defining moment, instilling a deep and lasting sense of pride in the children’s achievements.”

The Into Film Awards, sponsored by the UK film industry, celebrates young people’s creativity in film, showcasing and highlighting the wealth of tomorrow’s creative talent. This year’s awards received hundreds of entries from across the UK, with stories ranging from light-hearted comedies to thought-provoking films and documentaries.
