A Dagenham-based property company has been fined almost £2,000 after twice being caught fly-tipping.

Barking and Dagenham Council had previously installed cameras at Stratton Drive due to persistent late-night fly‑tipping next to Euro bins provided exclusively for council tenants.

The cameras captured a vehicle dumping bags of waste and household items on the public highway on two occasions within hours of each other.

The incidents took place on 1st November 2024 and again the next day. CCTV footage showed waste being dumped from a vehicle later confirmed through DVLA checks to be registered to Meeting Town Properties Limited, a company based nearby in Dagenham.

The company denied responsibility and claimed the vehicle had been stolen, however no evidence was provided to support this. After reviewing the CCTV evidence, Barkingside Magistrates’ Court found Meeting Town Properties Limited guilty of two counts of fly-tipping under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

At a hearing on 24th March, magistrates fined the company £918.60 for each offence, totalling £1,837.20. The fines were issued after the company failed to pay two original £400 fixed penalty notices, which had been offered as an alternative to prosecution.

Keith Stanger, director for enforcement, community safety and regulatory services said: “Stratton Drive is a known fly-tipping hotspot, and we installed CCTV there to protect residents and deter repeat offenders. In this case, the cameras did exactly what they were intended to do.

“We will not hesitate to take enforcement action against individuals or businesses who dump waste illegally. Fly‑tipping is a criminal offence that blights neighbourhoods and unfairly affects residents who do the right thing. This prosecution sends a clear message: if you dump waste in our borough, we will investigate, identify and take you to court.”

Residents are also being encouraged to report fly-tipping via the council’s website:
